The Steads chose a collection of their favourite photos of their children from which I selected this pair as the original photos were taken outdoors with a clear focus on the subjects. The combination of eight pairs of colours used in these pictures gives them a pop-art feel that livens the room.

This portrait was done from a professionally taken photograph. Each of the prints are approximately the same size as a normal photo would be. Doing 6 pictures one above the other makes this graffiti on canvas final picture an interesting shape to liven the unusual spaces you often find in old houses in London. [view picture]

Christine's Nephews

The photograph for this commission was of poor quality but showed an expression that Christine particularly liked. The stencil for this structure is based on vertical lines. The thickness of these lines builds up the shading for the picture which conveys the unique expressions of these two boys. I used the stencil 6 times with different colours to create this diptych. This much cherrished picture had good strong light on the subject. The background did not add to the portrait, it did not provide information about the subject so I chose to only include the figure in the stencils. For this picture I made a number of different final pictures for different members of the family. [view picture]

This commission was done as a 40th birthday present. The original photograph was taken using a camera of a picture that Ellie had on her mantelpiece. As I worked from a poor quality source this much of the picture was creatively added in the sketching stage. [view picture]

The Hall Family

The original photo for this picture was taken indoors using a flash. Because the photo didn't have natural light a silouette-style picture would not be suitable, thus I chose to make the picture more abstract. The stencil needed to be quite big for the people in the picture to be recognisable using this style. I am pleased with the pop-art feel to this picture. [view picture]

This picture utilises the background to develop the outlines in the picture. This picture captures Sarah's playful expression without showing much detail of the face. In this picture I used 3 stencils to build up the shading. [view picture]

I put myself in the position of choosing which photograph from the collection I have on the computer would make a good stencil art picture. I found I had few pictures of myself - I will need to ask other people if they have pictures of me. I selected a combination of 2 stencils to focus the attention of the viewer on the figure. Sad Self Portrait

This picture represents a sad part of my life, and as I have the fortune of being able to produce a series of portraits I have chosen to create a stencil artwork of this picture. I "over-exposed" the photograph and changed the framing so my face was moved closer to the right edge to emphasise the distraught emotion showed in the face. I have only done a single small image in the final picture to keep with the emotion. [view picture]
